An online course where you can learn to make color cosmetics
Mineral makeup fundamentally refers to dry, powder-based products, such as eye shadow and blush. Advanced color cosmetics, on the other hand, come in many different forms.
While color cosmetics contain the same pigments as mineral makeup, they also contain a range of ingredients that transform powder-based products into a whole array of exciting professional product types, just like you’d see in any makeup store – but filled with nourishing natural ingredients and perfectly tailored to yourself or your customers!
There are three main product types in color cosmetics:
- Anhydrous products, including lip balms, lipsticks, eye liner pencils and cream blush.
- Aqueous (water-based) products, including liquid eyeliner.
- Emulsions, including liquid highlighter, mascara, liquid foundation.
The type of product will determine which type of ingredients you can include in your formula.
The ingredients also need to ensure every makeup product you formulate is safe and stable; for example using emulsifiers, broad-spectrum preservatives or antioxidants.
Formulating Advanced Natural Color Cosmetics delves deep into the ingredients used in each of these types of products and provides information about a selection of suppliers from around the world.
What ingredients are used in natural color cosmetics?
In order for your homemade cosmetic products to be professional and scientifically correct, color cosmetic formulations are used, just like when formulating natural skincare products.
The great thing about natural color cosmetic formulas is that the pigment mixture can be changed and modified the way you want it; you can add colored pigments of your choice. Shades, hues and tints that suit one skin tone may not suit a different tone, so pigments can be adapted to suit you or your customers.
Other ingredients included in natural color cosmetics, are:
Oil soluble ingredients
Oil soluble ingredients form the base of lipsticks, cream eye shadow, concealer stick and more, plus are used in emulsions.
Carrier oils form the foundation of many natural products; butters add emollient, moisturizing and protective properties; waxes turn a liquid oil into a solid or semi-solid product (crucial when making solid products like lipsticks); and esters help to soften the skin and smooth the skin’s texture.
Water soluble ingredients
Water soluble ingredients form the base of water-based products (eg liquid eyeliner) and are also used in emulsions.
The most commonly used water soluble ingredients in natural color cosmetics are purified water, humectants to help keep the skin hydrated, and thickeners to thicken water into a gel.
Emulsifiers
Oil and water do not naturally mix; therefore, in order to make an emulsion (which is a blend of oil and water), an emulsifier is needed. In color cosmetics, liquid foundation, mascara and cream concealer are examples of emulsions, and emulsifiers include xyliance and emulsifying wax.
