The Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation helps students to learn how to formulate natural and organic skincare products from scratch like a professional. The aim of the course is to enable students to go beyond following other people’s recipes and instead be able to create unique formulas for themselves from the beginning.
Our Diploma course is great for small business owners, or people who want to turn their dreams of a product line into a reality, but it’s great for individuals too!
Keep reading to learn about what the Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation offers for students of all levels, whether your goal is to open up shop, or just make products you can’t find anywhere else for your own personal use.
Formulating is the Key to Creating Personalized Products… Safely!
Not everyone wants to open up a shop and sell their products. And that’s okay! If you want to make products for yourself, and you’ve never really formulated skincare products before, finding recipes with good instructions and reliable tips and ingredient information can be a great place to begin! With accurate information, you can begin to practice your product making skills. That’s a wonderful first step.
Most of our students start out doing exactly that. But eventually, they find that they want to:
- Hone their skills
- Make better products
- Discover more ingredients
- Better understand how ingredients work together
- Know what blends and ratios are the best
- Learn how to make products which are safer and more stable
Natural skincare lovers also have a tendency to constantly be on the lookout for the best, the newest, the most sustainable and healthiest choice. We want to learn more, to improve our skills and knowledge, and create consistently great products. And we get frustrated when we can’t find reliable information—flipping from one source to the next, trying to piece together inconsistent or incomplete (or even inaccurate!) information.
On top of all of that, for a lot of people, the process of making products, the actual mixing and combining, can be confusing unless you’ve got a good, hands-on demonstration. What goes in where, and at which point? What ways do you measure, how do you mix, do you need a ton of expensive tools or equipment or an entire laboratory to just make your dream face cream?
Many people aren’t sure what ingredients go well together, how to create a certain consistency, skin feel, or texture—and how to then adapt for different skin types, as well as how to tweak when we want to make changes. Maybe you want to share your personalized products with family and friends. How do you learn to accommodate different skin types and concerns, have different preferences, likes and dislikes—or even values?
This is where formulating comes in!
Become an Independent Creator of your own Masterpieces
When it comes to making products for yourself, family and friends—whether or not you want to sell them at any point—it absolutely benefits you to equip yourself with the knowledge, rather than having to rely on the expertise (or often lack of expertise) of other people’s recipes.
Simply copying recipes can only take you so far, and it can be challenging to take someone’s recipe and tweak it in a way that is safe…unless you know how to do it properly. So, what does this mean? It means you need to know how to formulate your own products from scratch.
Even if you’re not going to sell your products you want your products to be safe and stable. For selling, this means formulating with the knowledge of how to comply with the cosmetic safety regulations in your area. But whatever it is you end up putting on your skin, you want it to help you, not harm you, be a breeding ground for bacteria, or end up separating or spoiling.
What is the best way to ensure you make products that are not only functional, green and organic, but safe and stable?
Learn to formulate like the professionals do.
“I have gained so much confidence in myself to produce safe and natural products for all to use. This course has helped me to develop products for my own personal use due to high sensitivity to synthetic chemicals and help restore my skin youthfulness that was damaged through the use of many medications and climate damage.”
Nancy Ann Chong, Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation graduate.
What is Formulating?
Formulating is the practice, art, and science of making skincare products following a professional framework that enables you to design a product that is safe, stable, effective, and delivers the result you seek for the person intended.
The true benefit of formulating is that you get to decide!
You, the formulator, get to decide on the ingredients used, what the product will look, smell, feel, and function like. Haven’t you ever wanted to have every single skincare product made just for you?
The start-to-finish process of formulating like a pro takes into account so many factors, including: Your goals for the product; the desired functionality and performance; Your skin type, skin needs and specific concerns; Your values and ethics, i.e. if you’re vegan, cruelty-free, fair-trade, etc, and so much more. That way, your products are a reflection of who you are, what you want, and also what you value.
- If you’re a vegan, and you want to know more about plant-based ingredients, or ingredients that haven’t been tested on animals, you can find them.
- If you are looking to make organic products, this will rule out all ingredients that aren’t organic.
- If you want to make products without packaging, then you’ll be making solid products like shampoo bars and conditioner bars, solid body lotion, and the like.
- If you want to make products using locally-sourced ingredients, or fair trade ingredients or ethical ingredients, you can learn how to source them and use them.
- If your focus is on sustainable skincare/cosmetics, then you’ll want to look at water usage, packaging, plant based ingredients, the supply of those ingredients and where those ingredients have come from.
The Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation is for Everybody
The focus of the Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation is to inform and empower people to make their own natural and organic products from scratch, using professional-quality ingredients and methods, according to their own individual value systems and needs—and to do all of this at home.
We encourage students to express themselves, to be creative, to create things that are unique and meaningful, that make their hearts sing, that have that very personal stamp. Not only will this personal investment make you a better formulator, but it will make your products mean so much more to you as well.
And once you acquire those skills, and that knowledge, the next choices are yours. If you want to keep formulating for yourself, or develop your skill as a hobby, or sell to close friends and family, or start a business, or launch a brand, you can! It’s up to you!
What about the Certificate Course?
In addition to offering the Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation, we also offer a Certificate in Making Natural Skincare Products. And you may wonder, what’s the difference? Which one is right for me?
The difference between the two is pretty straightforward: If you want to get started making your own products, and need to learn the practical skill of making it by following someone’s recipe, then the certificate course is a great choice. If you have little to no experience, and are interested right now in making lovely products for yourself, family or friends, based on tried, tested and safe recipes, the certificate course will get you up and running.
If you want to learn how to do it yourself without relying on other people’s recipes, the diploma course is a better option. You’ll gain a broader, more comprehensive view of the formulation process, and be able to start from scratch to create a wider array of products using a wider array of ingredients. While the diploma course does additionally cover the things you’ll need to know if you want to eventually sell your products, it’s an added benefit which comes when you acquire the hands-on skills, gain the ingredient knowledge, and perfect the practice, art, and science of natural skincare formulation.
