What really got me interested in natural skincare formulation was that I have incredibly sensitive skin that just flares up, but the slightest thing, so I had to start making my own skincare.
I used my grandmother’s Victorian skincare recipe book to make all sorts of bizarre things with crushed strawberries and I don’t know what, and some of that was disastrous. So I thought I should really learn to do this properly and then I could use proper skincare products like everyone else. That was really how I got started with the School of Natural Skincare [Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation].
I was a bit nervous and things might go hideously wrong, but I just started off experimenting in the kitchen making skincare products for myself. I enjoyed it so much that I thought I could actually make a brand out of this. So that’s what I started doing.
Once you understand the fundamentals and you want to make a new type of product, you sort of know roughly how it’s going to work. So you feel a lot more confident then that you can make different products, which is really good. And I really love now that I’m going to actually sell them.
I think what I love most about being able to formulate my own products is that it’s just very empowering to be able to make any product that you want. So if you see a particular product and you think, yeah, that sounds nice, but I don’t like that ingredient, you can just go away and make your own with an ingredient that’s, say, locally produced. Or if there’s a lip balm, but it’s not vegan, you just go and make a vegan one so you can make it fit your values.
So for me, it’s been a really interesting journey. It’s very empowering to be able to make my own skincare and it’s very nice that my skin does not flare up now when I wash my face, which is good because I use all of my own products, obviously.
I think it’s just been a really great journey and I’ve really enjoyed it.”
